Report a safety concern directly to CLEO
CLEO Volunteer Handbook & Code of Conduct
Version: 2026.07.20. Board working handbook.
Welcome to CLEO
CLEO (Computer Literacy Education Outreach) is a student-led nonprofit that bridges the digital divide by teaching seniors essential technology skills. As a volunteer, you create real intergenerational connection — "not simply teen tech support." This handbook explains what's expected of you.
1. Joining (onboarding)
Before your first session you must:
- Acknowledge this Handbook and the Code of Conduct (below).
- Sign the Liability Waiver.
- If you are under 18, return a signed Parent/Guardian Consent (template T5).
- Pay chapter dues if your chapter collects them (optional; up to $20).
2. What you'll do
- Attend sessions at an approved residential facility or staffed public venue. Help in pairs or an open group setting—never alone with a senior in a closed or private space.
- Attend your chapter's meetings per your chapter's own attendance rules (each chapter sets these).
- Optionally help with presentations, socials (e.g., Hot Chocolate Social), and the Graduation Ceremony.
3. Code of Conduct
You agree to:
- Treat seniors, fellow volunteers, facility staff, and the community with respect, courtesy, and honesty — you represent CLEO.
- Show up reliably and follow your chapter's and the facility's schedule and sign-in rules.
- Protect privacy — do not share seniors' personal information or photograph them without consent.
Prohibited — never do these (refer the senior to facility staff):
- Banking, finances, or payments of any kind.
- Medical matters, or giving legal or medical advice.
- Irreversible changes to a senior's device, accounts, or settings.
- Handling a senior's passwords, money, or accounts on their behalf.
- Account recovery, purchases, payment entry, remote-access software, taking a device away, or transporting/being transported by a senior.
- Anything beyond your knowledge or comfort — ask a Co-President or facility staff.
4. Safety & incidents
- A named on-site host knows the session is occurring and is reachable; a chapter leader is present. Different venue models have additional rules.
- Report concerns directly at the public Report a safety concern page or through Slack. You do not have to report through chapter leadership. Retaliation for a good-faith report is prohibited. If anyone is in immediate danger, call emergency services first.
5. Good standing & membership
- Active members meet their chapter's participation requirements.
- Alumni (graduated/former) and Honorary members have no obligations.
- Violations may lead to a written warning, then suspension or dismissal by your chapter's Executive Committee. Conduct that harms members or seniors can permanently bar you from any CLEO chapter, and will be escalated as appropriate.
6. What you get
- A record of service hours entered by chapter leadership; CLEO does not independently audit them. A venue may separately verify hours.
- Leadership experience and a path to chapter leadership.
- Meaningful relationships with the seniors you serve.
Acknowledgment
I have read and agree to the CLEO Volunteer Handbook and Code of Conduct.
